S.A.C.A.L. offers a range of elective courses to enhance students' learning experience and introduce them to other aspects of the Arabic language and Arab culture.

Qur'anic Recitation:

This course introduces students to one of the most prominent Qur’anic sciences. It explains the basic rules of Qur'anic recitation (tajweed) in the Warsh reading (used in Morocco and some parts of Africa), as well as the Hafs reading, which is recited elsewhere in the Muslim world. The course will cover accurate pronunciation, phonetics and rhythm.
Prerequisites: Reading knowledge of Arabic is required.

Arabic Literature in Translation:

This survey course consists of a study of literary texts, including pre-Islamic and modern Arabic poetry.  Works by contemporary Moroccan authors will be given special emphasis.  Students are encouraged to suggest materials of particular interest.

Sciences of the Qur’an:

This course deals with the history of the Qur’an, including its revelation and compilation, its divisions into Meccan and Madani surahs, as well as Qur’anic exegesis.

Hadith:

This course discusses the Hadith and Sunnah (sayings and deeds of the Prophet) in relation to the Qur’an, with reference to the four schools of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence).

Wood and Plaster Carving:

In this course, students learn traditional carving techniques and create individual works of art. The course offers expert instruction by highly qualified teachers of art and design.

Calligraphy:

This course introduces one of the most highly regarded art forms in Arab civilization. Students will be exposed to a variety of styles, from the cursive Thuluth to the angular Kuf, in addition to the distinctively Moroccan calligraphy used in old Moroccan and Andalusian scripts. Students will also learn to handle the traditional tools used in this process with individual attention and step-by-step instruction.  Students will be able to produce their own works of art after a few sessions.

Lute class:

This class introduces the students to the lute (oud), one of the most highly esteemed of Arab musical instruments. Through private instruction, students will be able to explore and develop their talents and skills.

Cooking:

In this course, students will be introduced to the world of Moroccan cuisine and learn how to prepare traditional dishes such as couscous and tajine. Students will be provided with detailed recipes, step-by-step instruction, all necessary ingredients and delicious results!
